I Heart Hearts

In honor of Valentine's Day, let's look more deeply at the lyrics to that classic song of love, "Do You Believe in Magic?" by the Lovin' Spoonful.

Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart?
How the music can free her whenever it starts?
And it's magic if the music is groovy--
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie.
I'll tell you about the magic that'll free your soul,
but it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock 'n' roll.

"Do you believe in magic in a young girl's heart?" Do you believe in spirit, do you believe in love?
"How the music can free her whenever it starts?" Music is the conduit through which that spirit, that love, is released and expressed.
"And it's magic if the music is groovy--" There's a certain quality to a particular kind of music that connects with each person in a singular way.
"It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie." Movies are another means by which this spirit is accessed and expressed.
"I'll tell you about the magic that'll free your soul, but it's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock 'n' roll." Just like the Sufis and Transcendentalists say, there ain't no substitute for direct experience.

This, my friends, is the Curse of the English Major. And why I have a radio show.

I love your deconstructed love song! As a fellow English major, I approve.

And, as a fellow blogger armed with an English degree, I can really appreciate this--I do it all the time!
